Wattle and Daub is in Cowfold, which is a small village in the Heart of Sussex, a beautiful Southern County of ancient villages nestling in occasional woodland and rolling Downland. This historic county boasts many beautiful villages and historic buildings including many churches and even more pubs.
My husband, Jools frequents both as he rings the bells at our local 13th century church (St Peters) and sups the ales at our local 15th Century pub, the Royal Oak, both of which are also worth a visit. Even Wattle and Daub has a good history, indeed the name refers to the building material (split sticks and mud!) from which our adjoining 400 year old house; “The Old House”! is made.
This setting provides both the inspiration and the theme for Wattle and Daub and Sussex is a fantastic source for products both old and new. Sussex and the Home Counties is probably the best location in the world to find traditional English oak furniture and our low overheads and locality mean that we are able to offer high grade pieces dating back to the 17th Century at really competitive prices. We are also able to source specific pieces of furniture if customers know what they want but just cant find it.
However, we are not a typical antique shop, we have a particular style and we source products that we believe can fit with a contemporary scheme as much as a traditional one. We are passionate about style and good interior design and both our furniture and our home accessories need to pass these criteria before we offer them for sale. We aim to offer our customers accessories, gifts and furniture that will provide pleasure and genuinely enhance their homes.
Sussex also has a strong heritage of arts and crafts and this allows us to locate contemporary designers and craftspeople to offer unusual, innovative and beautiful pieces both in store and on line. Our gift range includes jewellery and scarves as well as toys and gifts for children and toddlers. We are very good at matching the right gift to the right person and love the “Aunty Mabel” challenge i.e. what to get for Aunty Mabel (no offence meant to Aunty Mabel). We can provide tailored advice to your budget both in store over the phone or on line. Jools calls me the “Gift Guru” because I love finding gifts for people that show real thought, care and attention.

I should also mention that Poppy and Pogo (our two cats) are not actually for sale although they often like to model our chairs and themselves in our shop window. They have got such a following that we have dedicated a page to them and their most recent antics; Poppy despite her beautiful and innocent looks is the hunter whilst Pogo is so soppy that he would rather make friends with mice than consider eating them! Like all cats they understand that we were put on this planet to serve them and don’t they just adore it!
Whether you want to shop on line or are able to visit us in person we would love to hear from you (you can contact us here) and we will do our best to provide you with a personal service that we hope you will find enjoyable and worthwhile.
